Human Rights Training for Prosecutors and Prison Officials in Ethiopia

Recent legislative reforms related to the promotion and protection of human rights generated a need for delivering training to officials in order to familiarize them with the changes as well as present what specific role they have in the protection and promotion of human rights. In line with the guidelines of the Human Rights Action Plan Coordination Office (HRAPCO), set up under the auspices of the Attorney General’s Office, Feteh designed four rounds of regional training for prosecutors and prison officials on the protection of human rights. These training are to be conducted by Feteh’s subcontractor, Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR, a registered CSO under the new CSO Proclamation), in cooperation with HRAPCO.

The first two-day training took place on February 7-8, 2020 for public prosecutors from Tigray and Afar National Regional States in Mekele, Tigray National Regional State. The second-round training was also conducted from March 13-14, 2020 in Bahir Dar, Amhara National Regional State for a total of 70 regional prison officials. The training was very interactive and participative as each presentation was followed by questions and comments from trainees on the basis of which discussion took place.
